As WWE Royal Rumble 2023 moves ever closer, it has already been breaking records. The upcoming event will be held at the Alamodome in San Antonio Texas on January 28th 2023.
Following on from the success of Clash at the Castle and Crown Jewel, WWE have now revealed that 2023 is set to kick off in a big way.
Royal Rumble 2023 Sets New Record.
In a new statement WWE announced that the event has broken the record for the largest gate in it’s history.
“WWE Royal Rumble 2023 – slated for Saturday, January 28 – has broken the company’s record for the largest gate in the event’s 36-year history.
Over the weekend, Royal Rumble surpassed the $5M mark and previous record holder from 2017 – the last time the event was held at San Antonio’s AlamoDome.
This carries a 2022 trend into 2023 where WWE set gate records for many of its events, including WrestleMania, Extreme Rules and Crown Jewel.”
The event was first held at the Alamodome back in 1997 and was headlined by the huge WWF Championship match between Shawn Michaels and Sycho Sid. Michaels scored the win in front of his home crowd claimed the World Championship for a second time.
Shortly after the event Michaels sparked controversy by vacating the title owing to a highly-controversial knee injury, while he infamously “lost his smile.”
The 1997 Royal Rumble Match was won by Stone Cold Steve Austin. It was the first of three wins in the match for the Texas Rattlesnake. WWE returned to the Alamodome for the event in 2017. On this occasion the Royal Rumble Match was won by Randy Orton.
The 2022 Royal Rumble was held in St. Louis, Missouri and saw Brock Lesnar win the men’s Royal Rumble match after losing the WWE Championship earlier in the night. Meanwhile, the women’s match was won by Ronda Rousey. The current SmackDown Women’s Champion was making her first WWE appearance since 2019.
