Ronda Rousey has claimed her WrestleMania 38 match will be remembered as a cult classic like the 1986 film Labyrinth starring David Bowie.
At the 2022 Royal Rumble Ronda Rousey returned to action for the first time in almost three years. The star hadn’t been seen in a WWE ring since WrestleMania 35 but wasted little time in entering and then winning the women’s Royal Rumble match.
This victory set her on a collision course with either Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch or SmackDown Champion Charlotte Flair. In the end, Rousey chose to face Flair, and the huge WrestleMania match was made. However, come the night of the show so many were left underwhelmed by the match which saw Flair score the win following a ref bump.
Reflecting on her match at WrestleMania 38 on her vlog, Rousey explained that feels it will eventually become known as a cult classic, comparing it to the 1986 movie Labyrinth.
“The first time I watched the match it was on my phone with the sound off when I was trying to put Po to sleep. She was feeding. I was like, ‘Hmm.’ Then I watched it again later and was like, ‘Oh.’ I think it’s going to be like one of those cult classic matches.
It’s going to be like The Labyrinth of matches. When it first came out, everyone was like, ‘What the hell? Why does David Bowie have a giant codpiece and talking to our children?’ Later, you realize something awesome about it every time and it kind of makes it one of your favourite movies ever.
I sometimes need to watch it and sing ‘You Remind Me Of The Babe.’ That’s what I feel like that match. Every time you watch it, you’ll catch something new about it. Re-watch ability is something that is very important in movies. The Labyrinth, case in point,”
Despite not claiming the gold at WrestleMania, Rousey defeated Flair at WrestleMania Backlash just weeks later. She held the title until Money At The Bank where she was shockingly defeated by Liv Morgan.
On the September 9th edition of SmackDown Rousey won a Fatal-Five-Way-Elimination-Match to become number one contender for the title once more. It has been confirmed that the pair will meet at Extreme Rules.
