Ronda Rousey Discusses Infamous WrestleMania 35 Botch

Ronda Rousey slams Becky Lynch into barrier at WrestleMania 35

SmackDown Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey has opened up about the end of WrestleMania 35 where she appeared to botch the pin for Becky Lynch’s victory.

An Olympian turned MMA superstar, ‘Rowdy’ Ronda Rousey rocked the world of wrestling when she made her WWE debut at the 2018 Royal Rumble. Her first match in the company came just a few short months later at WrestleMania 34 when she teamed with Kurt Angle to defeat the authoritative duo of Stephanie McMahon and Triple H.

Midway through a stellar rookie year, Rousey went a step further up the WWE ladder when she captured the Raw Women’s Title at SummerSlam 2018. Meanwhile, the unstoppable rise of Becky Lynch was also well underway in the company and when WrestleMania came around in 2019 so did The Man for Ronda Rousey.

The two women were on a collision course but WWE Chairman Vince McMahon had his own ideas, adding SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair to the match as a spoiler. With both titles on the line in the first female WrestleMania main event in history, it was Becky Lynch who made history by becoming Becky Two Belts.

However, the win was not without a shred of controversy as when the referee was counting Rousey’s shoulders to the mat, both of them did not appear to be down for the full count. Something picked up on by the announcers and replays after the match.

Speaking to her former tag team partner on The Kurt Angle Show, Ronda Rousey gave her take on the situation but makes clear it wasn’t on purpose:

“I didn’t think my shoulder was down, I was trying to flatten out to put my shoulder more down. So like that’s what was happening. I thought it was just the very tops of my shoulder. So I was trying to shimmy down, so the actual backs of my shoulders were down and I didn’t know that he had already started counting.”

“So I’m worried that my shoulder came up during the shimmy. So I was trying to help, but it ended up being awesome because now I have a gripe to revisit. But yeah, that wasn’t on purpose. I like apologised, about that one. I didn’t think it came up and it wasn’t until I saw it later. I’m like ‘oh sh*t, my bad.’ Kind of a big moment.”

Ronda Rousey is said by WWE to have suffered a “serious injury” after being locked in the Sharpshooter for a prolonged time on SmackDown by Natalya.
