WWE’s women’s tag team division has been the subject of much discussion and controversy since its inception. The titles have only been around since 2019 but have already changed hands several times.
And most memorably, the titles were the focal point of a major backstage issue that concluded with Sasha Banks (who has since been rechristened Mercedes Mone) leaving the company.
Following that situation, WWE tried to move on as if it never happened. The women’s tag title changed hands four more times until it reached current champions Damage CTRL (Dakota Kai & Iyo SKY). And yet, according to one of WWE’s biggest female stars, the division still suffers from a major dearth of challengers.
Ronda Rousey, who has won every women’s singles accolade on WWE’s main roster, is rumored to be in line for a women’s tag title match at WrestleMania 39. The dominant rumor is that she will team with fellow MMA alumna Shayna Baszler to take on Lita and Becky Lynch, the latter being widely expected to win those titles ahead of WrestleMania in order to give the title match “more of a marquee”.
And yet, Ronda Rousey has bemoaned the state of the women’s tag team division. Earlier today, Rousey took to Twitter to make a not-so-subtle dig at the lack of contenders for the women’s tag titles and at the infrequency of title defenses.
Apparently the entirety of the Smackdown tag division is @NatbyNature plus whatever poor soul she can recruit to her lost cause this week. #USOs defend their title every week, #DamageCNTRL has defended like twice in 6 months. What the hell is going on here?

Ronda Rousey unhappy with lack of attention to, and contenders for, WWE’s women’s tag titles
Kai and SKY first won the women’s tag titles on the September 22, 2022 edition of RAW. They held the titles for 48 days before losing them to the team of Alexa Bliss & Asuka. But those new champs only held the belts for 4 days as they lost them back to Damage CTRL at Crown Jewel 2022.
Since then, the Damage CTRL have defended their titles seven times, but only one of those defenses was televised or mentioned/promoted as part of a storyline. Said televised title defense took place on the December 16, 2022 edition of SmackDown and saw Damage CTRL retain against the team of Liv Morgan & Tegan Knox.
