Ronda Rousey Comments On Sha’Carri Richardson’s Olympics Drugs Ban

Ronda Rousey Sha'Carri Richardson

Former Raw Women’s Champion ‘Rowdy’ Ronda Rousey and Mickie James have given their thoughts on the USADA’s decision to ban Olympic hopeful Sha’Carri Richardson after she failed a drug test for cannabis use.

The failed drug test and decision to ban Richardson for one month has rocked the US Olympic Team as it means she will now miss the delayed Tokyo Olympics due to begin on Friday, 23rd of July. Richardson won the 100m at the US Olympic trials in Oregon in June. Earlier this year she also ran the sixth-fastest time in history with a 10.72 second run in Florida, clocking in at only 0.23 seconds off Florence Griffith-Joyner’s 33-year-old world record.

Now Ronda Rousey has had her say on the ban, criticising testing for marijuana use, saying that the testing for that drug is purely political.

Rousey tweeted:

Cannabis isn’t a performance enhancing drug – it’s tested for entirely political reasons and no sport governing body has the right to force athletes to conform to their political ideals – so sorry you had your dream stolen from you, @itskerrii”

Another former WWE Women’s Champion also waded into the debate surrounding Sha’Carri Richardson’s failed drug test, as Mickie James also took to Twitter with her thoughts.

James tweeted:

“Marijuana- known medically to help with inflammation; arthritis; pain; anxiety; muscle spasms; & sleep (side effects many athletes suffer from HOURS of training a day) NEVER known for its ability to SPEED any human up in any level. Also LEGAL across many states & soon all of [The USA].”

Sha’Carri Richardson discussed the failed test and ban on an appearance on NBC’s Today Show, saying:

“Don’t judge me, because I am human, I just happen to run a little faster.”

The athlete went on to explain how she had used the drug as a way to cope after her biological mother’s death:

“I apologise for the fact that I didn’t even know how to control my emotions or deal with that during that time”

‘Rowdy’ Ronda Rousey competed in the Olympics herself before embarking on her glass-ceiling smashing career in MMA. Rousey won a bronze medal in judo at the 2008 Games held in Beijing, China.
