WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns has addressed the rumours of The Rock making a Survivor Series appearance, 25 years after The Great One’s WWE debut.
In November 1996, in the hallowed halls of Madison Square Garden, a fresh-faced and curly-haired Rocky Maivia made his debut on WWE television as part of that year’s Survivor Series.
Maivia teamed with Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts, ‘The Stalker’ Barry Windham and Marc Mero to face Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler, Goldust, Hunter Hearst-Helmsley, and Crush. In the end, Rocky Maivia picked up the victory of his squad of four as the match’s sole survivor.
Fast forward 25 years and The Rock is an all-time WWE icon and Hollywood megastar, bridging the gap between movies and wrestling unlike anybody before him.
With 2021 marking the quarter-century anniversary of The People’s Champ first entering the WWE Universe and the company celebrating November as ‘Rock Month,’ many fans have been hopeful of an appearance from The Rock at the upcoming Survivor Series.
Roman Reigns however told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, that he’s not heard these rumours and he’s more interested in someone else that debuted at WWE’s November showpiece:
“These are rumors, you’re saying? I haven’t heard these rumors and I would think I’m closer than anybody at this point. It’s not what I’ve heard, but I also debuted at Survivor Series as well, so it’s a nice little tie-in”
The Tribal Chief was then asked if facing The Rock in the ring is something he’d relish:
“I would. I don’t know if he wants it. That’s something we do in our family as far as sports entertainment, professional wrestling, WWE, this is our platform and family business. I fought with my cousins The Usos about a year ago and where better to solve problems than the squared circle.”
Rumours also continue to persist that Roman Reigns and The Rock could be on a collision course for WrestleMania. However recent comments from The Rock suggest that the dream match between the two men could be some way off.
