Roman Reigns has revealed why he and Paul Heyman were first paired together.
After Roman Reigns made his WWE return at SummerSlam 2020, it was revealed that he was now represented by none other than Paul Heyman. This cemented Reigns’ heel turn, something fans were pleasantly surprised about after years of failed attempts to establish him as the next pure babyface.
Heyman has acted as The Tribal Chief’s Special Counsel ever since then, with the duo briefly going their separate ways during Reigns’ feud with Brock Lesnar, before reuniting at the Royal Rumble in January.
Roman Reigns was the guest on the most recent edition of Logan Paul’s ‘Impaulsive’ podcast and spoke to the YouTuber about his relationship with Paul Heyman, revealing that Heyman started to work with him on-screen because Lesnar hadn’t signed a new deal with WWE at that point:
“Brock (Lesnar) was in between contracts so Paul (Heyman) was kind of wide open, and it just fit, you know? He had that open creatively. He was still just working behind the scenes from a creative standpoint and then once it opened up
“I mean when you’re working with someone like Brock for as long as he did with the success that they had, you need to have something that’s legitimate come through to make that move and I think I was the only one that he wanted to work with, otherwise, I think he would just stay kind of plugged in and be helping from an overall directive standpoint.
“Once he knew, oh, I’m gonna be with Joe (Roman Reigns), it’s all good. I’m going to be with Roman, it’s all good, then we knew it was on.”
The Universal Title has been held by Roman Reigns for over 700 days and at Wrestlemania 38 Reigns was victorious over the then WWE Champion Brock Lesnar to unify the titles thus becoming the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion.
Recent reports suggest the current title situation is said to be complex as WWE wants to head into WrestleMania season with two single world championships but there is also a sentiment that the company does not want Reigns to lose before WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles.
