Rob Van Dam has claimed that he told WWE he was available to appear in the 2022 men’s Royal Rumble match.
ECW legend Rob Van Dam might not have stepped inside a WWE ring since August 2014, but very recently that nearly changed.
While the Royal Rumble match has seen numerous legends make special appearances down the years, many fans pointed out that the 2022 men’s Rumble was low on surprise entrants. Bad Bunny and Shane McMahon aside there weren’t really any stars of yesteryear on hand to scratch fans’ nostalgic itch.
However, Rob Van Dam has now revealed that he contacted WWE about appearing in the match. Speaking to Sportkeeda, Van Dam said that he was placed on the stand by list but was never given the call-up.
“I let the WWE know that I was available if they needed me for Royal Rumble, and I was on standby, with a brand new outfit feeling great, you know, in a great condition,” RVD said. “In the end, they did not call me in, but it could happen anytime. I really do not have any plans for it, but you know, I would consider any situation from any company. I would definitely consider it. If it’s right, it’s right.”
The Hall of Famer’s admission comes after Sean Waltman, better known as X-Pac revealed that he had also made himself available to the company. Waltman was recently cleared for a return to the ring following knee surgery.
Speaking ahead of the Royal Rumble, Rob Van Dam appeared to hint that his days as a full-time in-ring performer were over. The former World Champion said that he had numerous other projects that he’s working on, but none of them involved a wrestling show.
Mr Monday Night was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2021, with his last appearance on Raw coming on a special Raw Reunion in July 2019.
