Ricochet and the WWE Intercontinental Championship were both missing from the WrestleMania 38 lineup, with the champion proclaiming the once-prestigious title can’t miss another major WWE event.
The 4 March episode of SmackDown saw Ricochet capture his first WWE Intercontinental Championship, usurping Sami Zayn after a distraction from Zayn’s WrestleMania 38 adversary Johnny Knoxville. Unfortunately, neither Ricochet nor the ‘workhorse championship’ were featured on ‘Mania itself.
‘The One And Only’ did manage to make a successful defence during WrestleMania weekend, but this came on the ‘Mania-themed SmackDown that aired the day before. He defeated both members of Los Lotharios, Angel and Humberto, in a fast-paced Triple Threat.
Ricochet has now spoken out about WWE’s ill-advised booking strategies toward his Intercontinental Championship reign, stating on WWE’s The Bump that it can’t miss any more WWE premium live events (h/t Fightful):
“WrestleMania is always an electricity, it’s the ‘Showcase of the Immortals’, it’s something you do want to be on. WrestleMania is the top of the mountain. If I wasn’t going to be on it, I was so glad I was able to spend time with my son and recharge my physical and mental battery and the family battery. I’m glad I was able to do that. As much as WrestleMania is an event, it’s a feeling, it’s an emotion.
That’s my goal for next year, to make sure that [the Intercontinental Championship] and myself, collectively, together, make it to WrestleMania and make it on WrestleMania and that this title, I want to make it as famous as possible to where it can’t miss another one. This title can’t miss another premium live event. It’s not going to miss Backlash, it’s not going to miss Money in the Bank. WrestleMania is the ‘Showcase of the Immortals’ and Ricochet plans on being immortal.”
Signing with WWE in January 2018, the former Prince Puma has previously held both the United States and NXT North American Championships, alongside winning the 2019 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Since joining the main roster in early 2019, Ricochet’s booking has been a constant source of criticism amongst WWE fans.
Ricochet is currently scheduled to defend the Intercontinental Championship on tomorrow’s (15 April) broadcast of SmackDown against Jinder Mahal. As of writing, he’s without a WrestleMania Backlash challenger. That goes down on Sunday, 8 May.
