Ric Flair has recalled his short-lived World Tag Team Title reign in WWE and how it was cut short after his partner ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper got sick.
In 2006 WWE Hall Of Famers Ric Flair and Roddy Piper rolled back the years when the unlikely duo captured the World Tag Team Championship.
At Cyber Sunday 2006, fans could vote for which wrestling legend would partner with Flair to challenge the Spirit Squad for the World Tag Team Championship. Piper beat off competition from Dusty Rhodes and Sgt. Slaughter to team with The Nature Boy for the first time since a WCW Nitro in June 1999.
With decades of wrestling experience between them, the two legends overcame their younger opponents to capture the gold.
Now speaking on his Wooooo Nation Uncensored podcast Flair has recalled that time in his career and explained why their title reign was cut short – ending after only 8 days:
“Yeah, what a rib (laughs). Vince just said, ‘I’ll give you two clowns one more day.’ It was fun.”
“We flew to Europe…the first day we land, we were going to wrestle – I don’t remember against whom – and Roddy got sick in the dressing room. The doctors came, and they wouldn’t let Roddy wrestle.”
“We did something real quick where we got beat and they sent Roddy back to the hotel and bought him a ticket to go home the next day. They told him not to drink because he was having intestinal problems, so I went back to the hotel and he had already drunk 12 beers and smoked two joints (laughs).”
In Manchester, England on the 13th of November edition of Monday Night Raw Roddy Piper and Ric Flair lost the World Tag Team Title to Rated RKO.
Piper only wrestled on WWE television three more times including his memorable appearance in the 2008 Royal Rumble and at WrestleMania 25 where he teamed with Jimmy Snuka and Ricky Steamboat to face Chris Jericho.
