Ric Flair will wrestle his final match this weekend, which Ricky Steamboat – and Hulk Hogan, for that matter – could have been a part of had they not suffered from physicality issues.
The final match of ‘The Nature Boy’ will be a hot topic this weekend when he teams with his son Andrade El Idolo to face Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal. However, it seems that two WWE Hall of Famers could have been part of the match if they were physically able.
Speaking with Chris Van Vliet on his Insight podcast, Ric Flair indicated that both Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat and Hulk Hogan were possible options for the encounter, but “neither one of them are physically able to do it”:
“Well, neither one of them are physically able to do it. I talked with [Ricky] Steamboat for a long time and he’s got issues with his back and his shoulder. I think that if Ricky wanted to go out, he had that great run with [Chris] Jericho back in 2011 I think. I think Ricky wanted to go out with that memory, because he was as good back then as he was in his prime. He had some great matches and he liked the, ‘You still got it.’ Why put that on the line again?
And Hulk [Hogan], he has had so many back surgeries, a double hip replacement, double knee replacement, why take a chance? For me, everything is still hooked up still, thank God!”
Ric Flair has enjoyed memorable rivalries opposite both Ricky Steamboat and Hulk Hogan, particularly in the case of the former. Their famed trilogy from 1989 is classed as one of the best in history; all three – plus a fourth at a live event in Landover – were rated five stars by Dave Meltzer.
Flair hasn’t wrestled since September 2011, working a clash with Sting on IMPACT Wrestling’s weekly card. Since coming out of retirement in 2009, ‘The Dirtiest Player in the Game’ is yet to have a memorable contest for the right reasons, instead donning a blood-coated face several times.
Ric Flair’s Last Match, featuring several other contests alongside the star attraction, airs on Fite TV from 6:05pm EST (11:05pm BST for those in the United Kingdom on Sunday, 31 July.
