Ric Flair has stated that needed to put his wrestling boots back on because he had a lot of debts to repay.
‘The Nature Boy’ last wrestled in WWE against Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XXIV, with many thinking that the match against Michaels would be his final outing in the industry.
However, Ric Flair would go on to have matches in IMPACT Wrestling; his final match in the company was against Sting in September 2011. With Flair returning to wrestle again as part of the Starrcast V event this weekend in Nashville, the two-time WWE Hall of Famer has opened up about why he decided to wrestle after his WWE departure.
During his appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, the sixteen-time World Champion revealed that he had a lot of debts to repay and wrestling was his only solution. Ric Flair has had a history of debt issues in the past, so this isn’t too surprising:
“It was but then I got divorced for the 3rd time. It was hard paying the attorneys and paying alimony, so you know, I probably didn’t need to, but I kind of missed it too. I sure could have worked around it, but I never considered bankruptcy as an option.”
“Then when I got sick in 2017, I got behind with the IRS because the hospital bills were $1.3 [million] Medicare A, I didn’t have Medicare B at the time, I had to pay them $800,000. So not only did I have to go back in, I had to pay them back and then I had to pay the IRS another million dollars, just because I was late on what they call an offering compromise.”
Ric Flair is set to tag with his son-in-law Andrade El Idolo to take on the team of Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal. Conrad Thompson, the promoter of Starrcast V, recently revealed that Flair regrets wrestling after 2008, even hinting that Flair needed to wrestle “for a variety of reasons.”
