Ric Flair opened up about pitching an alternate ending to Sting‘s final match as well as his communication with Tony Khan.
AEW Revolution on March 3rd marked Sting’s final match after nearly 40 years in the wrestling business. He teamed with longtime partner Darby Allin to successfully defend the AEW Tag Team Championship against The Young Bucks in the main event of the show. Emotions were high throughout the night as The Icon’s career was celebrated, especially as Sting’s sons dressed as their father in previous eras of his career and got involved in the match.
The highly-praised spectacle drew some controversy when Darby Allin dove off a ladder through a pane of glass. Despite his injuries, Allin was able to finish the match, and only required 12 stitches to close his wounds.
As Sting’s longtime friend, Ric Flair was ringside for the bout, and got involved when he tried to shield The Icon from an attack from Matthew and Nicholas Jackson. Both he and Ricky Steamboat received EVP Triggers for their trouble.
Speaking in a new interview on Busted Open Radio, Flair revealed that he’d pitched an alternate ending to the bout that would see him turn on Sting one final time. He recalled:
“I gave them a finish for that match and they looked at me like I had seven different (inaudible)…
I don’t think Tony knew that I was on blood thinners. I’ve been doing all that sh*t for all these years and I’ve had blood clots since 2012. If he asked me once, he asked me 10 times. He said do not cut yourself, please…
I wanted those guys to have the same match but at the end, instead of leaving me laying there like that, just keep me on the outside the whole time. At the end, as Sting is standing there and those guys are gone, I jump on Sting. Boom boom boom, one big move to me [and] puts the Scorpion on me and we go out the way we started 31 years ago. It would have blown the roof off the joint and it would have made me a heel so I had somewhere to go because it’s just hard to get the people to get mad at me now.”
When Did Ric Flair Last Speak With Tony Khan?
Continuing, Ric Flair revealed that he hasn’t spoken with the AEW President since their discussion about the match at Revolution. He said:
“I haven’t heard back from him since…Ric, that’s a good idea, we’ll call you later on. At least I thought I could prove to him that I was thinking.”
Mark Henry, whose AEW contrast expired at the end of May, chided:
“You won’t.”
Elsewhere in the podcast, Ric Flair addressed his relationship with Steve Austin, claiming the fellow legend has “disappeared.”
