WWE Hall Of Famer Ric Flair is said to have refused to shake an iconic ECW star Sabu’s hand backstage in order to “embarrass” him.
Sabu had been competing in the ring since the mid-eighties but made his name in the diverse pot of talent that made up Paul Heyman’s ECW. In only Sabu’s second match in the promotion, he defeated Shane Douglas to become ECW Heavyweight Champion.
“The Homicidal, Suicidal, Genocidal, Death-Defying Maniac” left ECW for good in 2000 and went on to have a run in TNA before joining WWE when they relaunched the extreme brand once again for the second One Night Stand pay-per-view in 2006. Sabu stayed with the company until his contract expired in May 2007.
Speaking to PTM’s Vinny Vegas, Sabu discussed his relationship with Ric Flair and says Flair frequently sought to embarrass him by refusing to shake his hand in the locker room as etiquette dictates:
“Ric Flair, he’d come in the dressing room and shake everybody’s hand and skip mine. I’d put my hand out, he’d skip it and embarrass me. I’d go to shake everybody’s hand and I’d go to him, I’d put it out and he’d turn his back on me. He’d turn his back and I’d try to get a handshake from his back, so I stopped putting my hand out for him.”
Sabu went on to say he doesn’t know why he elicited such a response from Flair but accuses The Nature Boy of jealousy:
“I don’t know, but there’s no reason for him to be jealous of anybody. He’s top of the world. He always was and he always will be. There was no reason for him to be jealous. But I’ve seen him and heard him stepping on younger guys when he didn’t have to. He was already on top, he was world champion.”
