As rumours continue to swirl about WrestleMania 39 and a potential big-money showdown between Roman Reigns and Dwayne Johnson, Ric Flair has claimed that he believes the match won’t happen.
The speculation surrounding a match between Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, and Roman Reigns began in the lead up to WrestleMania 38. However, on that occasion there was no appearance from The Great One, and Reigns defeated Brock Lesnar to add the WWE Championship to his Universal Title. This led many to believe that a match between Roman and his Hollywood megastar cousin would now be even bigger, and a more likely possibility at WrestleMania 39 in California.
“I Don’t Think The Rock Would Come Back And Do A Favour” – Ric Flair
Despite fan speculation and reports suggesting that the match will be headlining the event, The Rock has at least publicly, not committed to an appearance. Although he hasn’t ruled out getting back in the ring either.
One man who has become something of an expert when it comes to wrestling comebacks is Ric Flair. While the man himself has been no stranger to lacing up his boots one more time despite appearing to be retired, he doesn’t think that Rock will follow suit.
Speaking on his podcast,To Be The Man, Flair stated that he doesn’t see the WWE legend coming back to just lose to Reigns, adding that having him defeat the Tribal Chief makes even less sense. Instead, the Nature Boy suggested that Cody Rhodes should be the man to go one-on-one with the Head of the Table.
“I don’t think personally it’s a given that The Rock’s going to do it. I think, and as much as he might respect Roman, I’m sure they do all those guys, it’s brotherhood like no other. I don’t think The Rock would come back and do a favour, why would he? Tomorrow morning he goes back to his acting career with a loss? I don’t think so. I don’t see that happening. And it would do the company no good to put the belt on The Rock because he’s not going to be a full time wrestler ever again. So I’ve said before, if The Rock happens, that’s great. If it doesn’t I would like to be Cody Rhodes.”
While Ric Flair has tipped the American Nightmare to face Roman Reigns, former WWE star Tommy Dreamer recently put forward Intercontinental Champion Gunther. The ECW legend claimed that Gunther is at the top of an ever decreasing list of believable opponents for the dominant champion.
