Rhea Ripley Reveals She “Hated Herself” Early In WWE Career

Rhea Ripley has opened up about the struggled she faced early in her WWE career, revealing that she hated herself and feared she would be fired.

While Rhea Ripley might currently stand as one of the biggest female stars in WWE and a permanent fixture on Monday Night Raw, she’s had quite the journey to get there.

Since signing with WWE in 2017, Ripley has enjoyed enormous success, winning championship gold in NXT UK, NXT and on Raw. However, the Nightmare has revealed that her early days in the company were much more of a struggle.

Appearing on Mark Andrews: My Love Letter To Wrestling, the Australian star opened up about her early days in WWE. Ripley, who appeared in the first Mae Young Classic sporting long blonde hair and generic wrestling gear, said she went through a lot before returning to the tournament a year later.

“A lot of things. It was the whole year between the Mae Young Classic one and two. I went through a lot, mentally, behind the scenes. I was having troubles at home, at work, I hated myself. Very mentally weak at that point. I didn’t feel like I was good enough. I was constantly being told I wasn’t good enough and I had to do something to improve it. I was on the chopping block a couple of times and I nearly got booted.

I just had a lot going on and I was very down. I want to say, I had a six month period and I was like, ‘eff this, I don’t care what anybody thinks about me.’ All they’re going to do is judge me anyway and I can’t listen to everyone because everyone’s advice is clashing with other people’s advice. I had to change my mental game completely. I started going to a gym, I signed up to an actual gym,”

Continuing on, Ripley recalled the reaction she got after rocking up to the 2018 edition of the tournament with a new haircut and totally new look.

“We have this thing called car wash where you take all the photos and videos, leading up to the Mae Young Classic, so we get all the footage we need. I sort of walked up in this new gear. I got my haircut, but I (showed up) in this new hear and one of the coaches was like, ‘What’s this?’ ‘The new Rhea Ripley, and I’m a heel.’ ‘Okay,’ and I knew that ‘okay’ was like, ‘this is your ass if it doesn’t work,'”

Rhea Ripley has been heavily featured on WWE television in recent weeks, notably lasting 44 minutes in a gauntlet match on Raw ahead of Elimination Chamber. At the event in Saudi Arabia, Ripley again enjoyed a strong showing, earning numerous plaudits for her performance.

On the most recent episode of Raw, the former Raw Women’s Champion decisively dispatched Nikki A.S.H.
