During night 2 of WrestleMania, ‘The Nightmare’, Rhea Ripley successfully defeated Asuka to capture the RAW Women’s Championship just 20 days after debuting on Monday Night RAW.
‘The Empress of Tomorrow’ and ‘The Nightmare’ would clash in the semi-main event of the show, following on from Ripley’s shocking heel turn on the 5th of April edition of RAW attacking the former Women’s Champion during a tag match against the current WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions – Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax.
The turn would signify Ripley’s return to villain status for the first time since August 2019.
Ultimately, ‘The Riptide’ was the difference maker with Ripley able to catch Asuka off guard and lay her out allowing the 24-year-old to pick up the monumental victory.
Ripley was played to the ring by Ash Costello, adding to the big fight feel, and that continued throughout the match. The pair exchanged a series of wince-inducing strikes and submissions, but Ripley always managed to find a way to stem the champion’s momentum. The Nightmare recovered from a devastating DDT from the ring apron to the floor to overpower Asuka, eventually hitting the Riptide for the win.
Ripley’s win was one for the history books for a variety of reasons, the Australian born superstar becomes the first Aussie to hold singles gold in the WWE [Main Roster] and has also become the first women to hold the NXT UK Women’s Championship, the NXT Women’s Championship and the WWE Women’s Championship.
‘The Nightmare’ joins ‘The IIconics’ as Australians who have won WWE gold at WrestleMania with Peyton Royce and Billie Kay famously capturing the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania 35, defeating The Boss ‘n’ Hug Connection (Bayley and Sasha Banks), Nia Jax and Tamina, and Beth Phoenix and Natalya in the process.
Ripley becomes just the 9th woman to hold the RAW Women’s Championship, joining the likes of:
- Alexa Bliss
- Becky Lynch
- Ronda Rousey
- Sasha Banks
- and Nia Jax
The WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships were also on the line during night two of WrestleMania with Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax defending their titles against the veteran duo of Natalya and Tamina Snuka.
Natalya and Tamina would qualify for the championship opportunity during night one’s Tag Team Turmoil match, defeating Lana & Naomi, The Riott Squad, Mandy Rose & Dana Brooke and Billie Kay & Carmella.
Night one of WrestleMania would see fellow NXT alumni Bianca Belair also victorious in championship action as she defeated Sasha Banks in the main event of WrestleMania in a critically acclaimed history-making bout.
