Former WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Rey Mysterio, is no stranger to the Royal Rumble. In 2006, he lasted a record-breaking 1 hour 2 minutes and 15 seconds to outlast 29 other Superstars and win the match. That year he would go on to defeat Randy Orton and Kurt Angle at Wrestlemania 22 for his first run as t world champion.
The Royal Rumble match famously pits friend against friend as it’s every competitor for themselves, battling for the prestigious championship match at WrestleMania. Family ties are no barrier to competition in the match either. Brothers such as Owen and Bret Hart, Matt and Jeff Hardy, and Scott and Rick Steiner have all battled against each other in the Rumble match.
This year, however, could see father and son come face to face should Rey and Dominik Mysterio both enter the men’s match. Speaking to WWE’s The Bump, Mysterio discussed what would happen if he had to take on his son.
“I would have to throw him out right away. Yes, I mean, we’d have to do it, you know? There’s just no other option. Either he goes or I go. But I’m sure that I get first dibs on that, so he’s going over the top.”
Neither man has declared for the match, as some WWE Superstars are eligible to do, according to WWE official Adam Pearce. As the men’s match only has nine participants announced so far there is plenty of room for both Mysterios to compete for their place in the title match of their choosing at WrestleMania 37.
