Rey Mysterio Says On-Screen Split With Dominik “Would Have Been Good”

Rey Mysterio has suggested that an on-screen split with his son Dominik through the WWE Draft would have been a good thing for the young star.

By the time that Rey Mysterio returned to WWE in 2018 he was already a bona-fide legend, however it was only the start of the story for his son Dominik. While the younger Mysterio had appeared on WWE television before as a child, now that he was training as a wrestler his appearances became more and more frequent.

By the time that the whole Mysterio family was wrapped up in a feud with Seth Rollins and his disciple Buddy Murphy in the summer of 2020, Dominik was ready to take his own steps inside a WWE ring. This led to Dominik making his in-ring debut at SummerSlam against Seth Rollins.

As the feud rumbled on, before being eventually scrapped, the father and son began to team together more regularly. After being drafted to SmackDown that October, the Mysterios focused on winning the blue brand’s Tag Team Championships. A feat they accomplished at WrestleMania Backlash.

At Money In The Bank the pair lost the titles to The Usos before cracks started to appear in their on-screen relationship. Dominik was pushing for more independence while Rey remained trying to look out for his son.

As a result many had expected the pair to be split up during the recent WWE Draft, but that wasn’t the case with both men moving to Raw.

Speaking with Graham GSM Matthews of Bleacher Report, Rey Mysterio said that a split might have actually been a good thing.

“That was definitely up to destiny,”

“We did talk about [the possibility of being split up]. I said, ‘If we eventually get split up, then it was meant to be. You go your way, I’ll go mine.’ At the same time, it would’ve given my son some independence to grow on his own. Pretty much the story we were telling right before we got drafted to Raw. It was in the back of our minds, but it wasn’t anything we were worrying about. If anything, it probably would have been good. It’s a change.”

Despite this, Rey Mysterio explained that he’s enjoyed every moment of being able to share the ring with his son.

“I’ve been enjoying every moment that I’ve gotten to step in the ring with my son in the ring and backstage,” Mysterio stated. “Just interacting [with him] has been incredible. It has been almost a rebirth of my career. I see him and I go back and think of my first baby steps in this industry. I’ve been enjoying it to the fullest.”

On the most recent episode of Monday Night Raw, Dominik Mysterio was defeated by Austin Theory, while Rey Mysterio was unsuccessful in his attempts to become number one contender for the WWE Title in the main event.
