Rey Mysterio Says He Didn’t Think Dominik Was Ready For His WWE Debut

Dominik Mysterio being sat on by Seth Rollins

Rey Mysterio has discussed his son Dominik’s WWE debut at SummerSlam 2020 and says if it had been up to him, it would not have happened.

Dominik Mysterio became embroiled in his father’s feud with Seth Rollins in the summer of 2020 and this led to the younger Mysterio making his in-ring WWE debut at SummerSlam against the former WWE Champion. Rollins won the bout but Mysterio impressed, taking the Monday Night Messiah to his limit in a match that went over 20 minutes.

Now both Dominik and Rey Mysterio have discussed that time with Kurt Angle on The Kurt Angle Show [first available early and ad-free at AdFreeShows.com]. According to Dominik, when his dad told him about the planned SummerSlam showdown with Rollins, he thought it was a joke:

I was excited. I thought it was a joke at first. When he told me, I thought my dad was kidding. They were serious and it ended up becoming one of my favorite matches. I’ve only had a year.”

Rey Mysterio followed up by saying that they had a plan for Dominik’s progression in place and says he didn’t think his son was ready for that big of a spotlight:

“We had a plan lined up for Dom. A plan to go to the Performance Center, train, and get ready to eventually sign with the company. This whole angle just started to evolve organically. They brought it up to my attention if Dominik would be interested in wrestling.”

“I personally didn’t think he was ready. That’s why he said he thought it was a joke, but no, they were serious. They wanted to know if he could be part of the match for SummerSlam, and sure enough.”

Dominik added that he was confident he was ready and wanted to take on the challenge:

“When he asked me, he said, ‘No, this is serious,’ and I said, ‘Alright, let’s do it.’ I thought I was ready. I had been training for a little over two years. If there was going to be a time, that was the time.”

The two-time World Heavyweight Champion Rey Mysterio concluded by saying that his uncertainty came from a place of fatherly protection as he didn’t want Dominik to fail:

“I told him, I said, ‘If I were to make the decision for you, I would not take it.’ I didn’t want him to fail. If he took the opportunity and he did bad, it’s very hard to cover that up. First impression is the best one and I was worried.”
