Rey Mysterio Admits He Nearly Retired During Rivalry With AEW Star

Rey Mysterio

Rey Mysterio is a lucha libre legend, spending decades in the world of professional wrestling and still going strong.

However, speaking to Corey Graves on the latest edition of After the Bell, Mysterio revealed that he considered retirement during his 2019 feud with Samoa Joe. Mysterio had returned to WWE not long before this feud, and he felt like his time might be through as younger talent rose in popularity. He revealed that it was his son Dominik who told him to continue.

“I mean at one point when I first came back [to WWE], I was actually feuding with Samoa Joe and I remember that’s when I really wanted to hang up the mask and retire. As weird as it sounds, Dominik convinced me not to and told me to stay. I just felt like I was falling behind with all this young talent opening up a path… but I stayed and I committed to putting in the work and it’s been incredible ever since.

“Yeah, I was really having doubts and I was like ‘Maybe it is time to step back and let this new generation come in and do their thing.’ But I think shortly after, I went to get some Stem Cells and I came back and I was ready to go.” (h/t Fightful)

Dominik Mysterio played a part in his father’s rivalry with Samoa Joe, appearing ringside for Rey’s matches and even coming face to face with Joe on a number of occasions.

Rey Mysterio Will Face Dominik Mysterio At WrestleMania 39

These days, however, the Mysterio family is far from united. After turning on his father at Clash at the Castle, Dominik Mysterio joined Rhea Ripley in The Judgment Day, and the two have been wreaking havoc ever since. They’ve interrupted multiple Mysterio family gatherings, and Dominik was even arrested following his actions on Christmas Eve.

After being goaded by his son for months, Rey Mysterio finally accepted Dominik’s challenge to face him at WrestleMania on the March 24th episode of SmackDown. The two will face off on night one of the blockbuster event with the match taking place on April 1st.

It’s set to be a busy weekend for Rey as he will also be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame on March 31st.
