AEW star Rey Fenix could be in the promotion for an extended period following previous reports regarding his exit.
Following months of speculation, it was recently reported that The Lucha Bros had left AEW, signed with WWE and were expected to join the main roster soon. However, a follow-up report from Fightful Select stated that the deal had not been done and that Fenix was still under contract.
Further information on the status of Fenix and Penta El Zero Mieda was reported by Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, who stated that currently both Fenix and Penta are still under contract:
They are under contract to AEW. I remember when I left and people were saying that Pentagon had signed with WWE, and he can’t sign with WWE. Technically, he is telling people that he has not talked to them, of course, that’s not true. But in a sense, if he says he had [then] that’s tampering, he’s under contract with AEW. The contract is about to run out and he is going to WWE. That is what’s going to happen.
Continuing, Meltzer added that although Penta could exit the promotion soon, because of Fenix missing shows due to injury he could be kept under contract for the best part of a year:
“As far as Rey Fenix goes, it’s still up in the air with Tony Khan. I was told tonight that Rey Fenix has not been told that he’s being released or going to be allowed to go, and he’s got like a year left because of injury time. His contract itself is up the same time that Pentagon’s would be, but they could keep him for another year. I don’t know what’s going to happen and nobody knows what’s going to happen. I know, obviously, he wants to go, we’ll see.”
It should also be noted that Penta has previously stated that he and Fenix are a package deal, meaning that his tag partner’s delayed exit will affect his own future plans.
Will Tony Khan Release Rey Fenix?
Meltzer also speculated as to whether or not Tony Khan would look at releasing Fenix early despite the added on injury time, noting that if it was the other way around WWE would not release wrestlers early:
“It’s one of those things where are you the nice guy and let him go? Or do you fight fire with fire knowing that in the same situation, there’s not a chance WWE would do that. They haven’t used him at all. They haven’t used either of the guys. Rey Fenix is a super talented guy, you got him for a year, I think that if you would want to use him.
I could see not using Pentagon. I could also see the argument that if he’s leaving, have him put a couple of guys over on the way out. That’s kind of how it used to be done. That’s how Vince would do it, rather than just ice the guy. But we’ll see how it plays out. But Fenix, it’s up to Tony Khan essentially, I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Rey Fenix could make a return to TV, but the chances remain slim.
