John Cena vs. The Rock is the biggest match WWE can book in Cena’s Farewell Tour, says one of the soon-to-be retired star’s most important rivals.
At ECW One Night Stand 2006, John Cena unsuccessfully defended the WWE Championship against Rob Van Dam. RVD’s win at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City remains iconic to this day. Cena never had to face such a hostile crowd in his career up until that point.
Cut to 2025, The Greatest Of All Time is doing a Farewell Tour, and so far, he has been doing one of two things: either he wrestles a ghost from his past, or he pulls out several big moves as a throwback to his rivals that had a significant impact on his career. Come December, John Cena will ride off into the sunset.
Rob Van Dam Pushes For John Cena vs. The Rock III
During a recent interview with TMZ Sports, RVD revealed that he almost arrived at signing up for a one-off against John Cena as part of the latter’s WWE Farewell Tour. Unfortunately, the ECW Original had to bow out of the discussed match, as he explained why it couldn’t happen.
He then agreed with the hosts that John Cena vs. The Rock was the biggest match the sports entertainment capital could book for The Last Real Champion and felt The Final Boss should return for that encounter. After all, he instigated Cena’s heel turn in March, but has not been seen on WWE TV ever since.
The Rock. The Rock, The Rock, The Rock. That’s definitely as big as you can go, bro. Where are you going to go from there?” Van Dam said, rather matter-of-factly.

RVD Also Weighed In On Cena’s WWE Wrestlepalooza Match Against Brock Lesnar
Promoted as “One Final Time,” the upcoming showdown between the old foes will also be Brock Lesnar’s first WWE match in two years. The former UFC mauler is yet another important rival in Cena’s career, and he is a huge box office attraction himself. RVD further weighed in:
Brock is like, next to The Rock–he definitely is one of the biggest stars. I’ve been a fan of Brock. He brought credibility to the sport by being the WWE and the UFC Heavyweight Champion,” RVD said. “He’s the man. He’s the guy I want people to go up to and ask if wrestling is fake [laughs].
He’s an animal. And so, whatever you can do with him creatively, I hope it’s good. So, I would like to see him and Cena go at it, and then I would like to see him and The Rock go at it.”
John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar’s final throwdown will take place on September 20 in Indianapolis at Wrestlepalooza, WWE’s first PLE on ESPN. Cena has seven more dates remaining in his Farewell Tour.
As for The Final Boss, he was recently at the Venice Film Festival looking almost unrecognizable, promoting his new film, The Smashing Machine, the biopic of UFC veteran Mark Kerr.
