Vince McMahon retired from WWE yesterday, but the timing of his announcement couldn’t have come at a better time for the stock market.
Vince McMahon shocked many when he announced he was retiring from all executive duties in WWE, effective immediately. McMahon posted a tweet to confirm the news at 9:05pm BST (4:05pm EST), which came minutes after the American stock market closed.
Many have speculated that this is the reason for the abrupt timing of Vince’s announcement. By officially retiring after the stock market closed, it meant that no stock trades can be made over the weekend.
Dutch Mantell, who previously worked for WWE as a manger in various eras, commented on the matter during this week’s Smack Talk podcast with Sportskeeda Wrestling’s Sid Pullar III and Rick Ucchino:
“Now, as I read that today, Vince McMahon retired, and I didn’t ever think I would ever hear those words. I think he would have gone until he died. The stock market closed at 4’Oclock; he announced his retirement at 4:05. That means no trades can be made this weekend, I guess. I don’t know it. The stock is really not as bad as a lot of people thought it would be because it’s back up. It went to the high, in the mid-60s, in the mid-50s, which is not too bad.”
Zeb Colter last appeared for WWE in December 2015, where his partnership with Alberto Del Rio ended. Also appearing under the moniker of Uncle Zebekiah in the 1990s, ‘Dirty’ Dutch Mantell had previously managed the likes of Jack Swagger, The Blu Brothers, and Justin Bradshaw, the future JBL.
News of Vince McMahon’s retirement from WWE led to several emotions being felt. WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley stated that McMahon changed his life, while Tony Khan joked about now being the longest-serving active CEO in wrestling.
Vince will be replaced by Stephanie McMahon as Chairwoman, with Stephanie and Nick Khan co-serving as CEO. It’s unclear as to who, exactly, will be the new Head of Creative, although Kevin Dunn and Bruce Prichard were reportedly the points of contact for last night’s SmackDown.
