Adam Cole has been the subject of recent reports surrounding his contract status with WWE, now a new update has been given that suggests why Cole originally agreed to a short-term extension.
Wrestling Inc. first reported on the contract status of Adam Cole saying that the former leader of The Undisputed Era’s WWE deal was to expire after SummerSlam in August. That report also noted that Cole’s deal had been extended to SummerSlam following The Great American Bash in July. At that event, Cole defeated his former stablemate Kyle O’Reilly in the main event.
Fightful Select have followed up that report by saying that within the company it was assumed that Cole’s deal expired in December and internally people were surprised to find out it was actually up in early July. The report adds that those at the top of the company were only aware shortly before the contract expired but Adam Cole told WWE that he would be willing to work through SummerSlam before re-assessing things.
It is also noted in the report that sources from within WWE praised Cole for his openness and desire to extend his deal with the company in this way although it is not known if Cole had put pen to paper on a contract or is working with a verbal agreement.
Now talkSPORT has reported that their belief is that Adam Cole agreed to a short-term extension to allow him to put over Kyle O’Reilly at the upcoming NXT TakeOver 36 that will take place the night after SummerSlam. O’Reilly and Cole have been engaged in a war since Cole turned his back on the Undisputed Era back in February. The two men fought in an Unsanctioned Match in the main event of NXT TakeOver: Stand And Deliver in April but Cole avenged that loss at The Great American Bash.
talkSPORT is also reporting that as part of the short term deal agreed between WWE and Cole that the former NXT Champion was able to “kill the non-compete clause” that is common place if a wrestler is released from a contract.
Given the current climate in the wrestling world about rumours of former WWE Champions ending up elsewhere other than WWE, fans around the globe will no doubt be watching to see what Cole’s next move will be.
Adam Cole has a significant past with many of the higher-ups in All Elite Wrestling, specifically The Young Bucks. Cole and The Bucks were heavily featured during the early days of Being The Elite and The Superkliq as they dubbed themselves were all aligned with Bullet Club along with Kenny Omega. Cole’s girlfriend Dr Britt Baker is also the reigning AEW Women’s World Champion.
