A new report has revealed the reaction backstage to former WWE Champion Big E shockingly losing his title to stand-in challenger Brock Lesnar at Day 1.
Big E became the second member of The New Day to capture the WWE Championship when he cashed in his Money In The Bank briefcase on Bobby Lashley in September to win his first world title gold in the company.
During his reign on top, he survived challenges to his title from Lashley, Drew McIntyre, and Austin Theory but his challenge at WWE Day 1 on New Year’s Day eventually proved too much as his reign came crashing to an end at 110 days.
Big E was originally scheduled to defend his title in a Fatal Four-Way bout at the event against Lashley, Kevin Owens, and Seth Rollins but COVID-19 intervened in the event, meaning Big E ended up with another challenger.
Brock Lesnar was originally scheduled to take on Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship but after The Tribal Chief was struck down with COVID-19, Lesnar was left without an opponent. WWE placed Lesnar into the WWE Title match, making it a five-man affair, and The Beast Incarnate did what he did best as he vanquished his opponents to become a six-time WWE Champion.
A new report from Fightful Select has attempted to give some insight into how the move to take the title off of Big E has gone down behind the scenes in WWE. The report states that some in the company felt Big E wasn’t “booked consistently” during his time as WWE Champion.
It also adds that there were many people backstage involved with Big E’s ongoing storyline that went “above and beyond” to make sense of how things were playing out on-screen.
