The Rock has shared his gratitude and surprise in a recent Instagram post, after a rare football trading card featuring Johnson sold for a mammoth $45,000.
Before the world knew him as the most electrifying man in sports entertainment, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson pursued a career in American football. Taking the position of defensive tackle, he was drafted to the Miami Hurricanes in 1991. Johnson would sign with the Calgary Stampeders in 1995, but was cut from the team two months later.
The card depicts Johnson during his 1994 season with the Hurricanes. Taking to social media, ‘The Great One’ expressed his shock and awe at the value of his football card. Johnson wrote that although his dream of playing in the NFL never came to fruition, his card being sold for such a high value on Super Bowl weekend is a humbling moment:
“This story of how my UNIV of MIAMI football card’s value continues to rise has become so surreal to me 🤯
Playing in the @NFL was my dream and playing in the Super Bowl was my even bigger dream.
Of course, neither dream came true for me ☺️🤦🏽♂️ but years later…
On SUPER BOWL Sunday my rookie card gets sold for 45K!!
Congrats to the winning bidder! 👏🏾🥃
I never made it as a player to the big dance, so this humbling irony is not lost on me one bit 🙏🏾
The Rock went on to the 1995 NFL draft, but went un-drafted. Shortly after, he would sign with WWF and would become one of the most iconic professional wrestlers of all time. Following his massive success in the ring, The Rock turned to acting, becoming one of the highest paid performers in all of Hollywood.
Evidently, football continues to be a major passion in Johnson’s life. He bought the XFL from Vince McMahon in 2020, announcing shortly after that the league will return in 2022.
