According to Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the current plan for Randy Orton vs. The Fiend at the Royal Rumble is to bring back a popular match from WrestleMania 36.
In the latest edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the journalist stated that current plan is for The Fiend to battle Randy Orton in a Firefly Funhouse Match, following the heated conclusion to their final battle at Tables, Ladders and Chairs.
Following the shocking ignition of Bray Wyatt’s character on December 20, Alexa Bliss dropped a major hint that the persona had evolved on Monday Night Raw before offering herself as a sacrifice to ‘The Viper’ as the red brand went off the air for 2020.
Ringside News first broke the scoop that WWE were planning to pit the rivals against each other on January 31, with Dave Meltzer now confirming that the cinematic bout is currently in the works.
The last time we saw a Firefly Funhouse Match was on the second night of WrestleMania 36, when Wyatt’s ignoble psyche defeated John Cena following what was a tribute to the golden age of professional wrestling.
The bout, which saw John Cena begin in the ring before being transported through a multitude of eras which paid homage to the old Saturday Night’s Main Event, NWO and other favourite moments from wrestling past as well as encapsulating the wishes of fans for Cena’s booking over the years, saw just two wrestling moves executed.
Wyatt snagged the victory inside a ring surrounded by darkness with a mandible claw and Sister Abigail.
While some fans have already bemoaned the return of The Fiend after what seemed to be a definitive ending at WWE TLC, it is going to be fascinating to see how WWE bring back the star and if the character has indeed evolved into something more monstrous than ever before.
