Randy Orton Ties The Undertaker For Astonishing SummerSlam Record

Sixteen may have been a significant number to John Cena at SummerSlam as he chased his 17th world title but it was also significant to Randy Orton who tied an incredible record.

When Orton stepped into the ring with his RK-Bro partner Riddle to defeat AJ Styles and Omos for the Raw Tag Team Championship, it marked Orton’s sixteenth appearance at SummerSlam. This tied the record for most SummerSlam appearances that was held by the iconic Undertaker.

Orton’s win at SummerSlam 2021 puts his record at The Biggest Party Of The Summer at 8-8 with The Undertaker still ahead in the win column with ten victories at SummerSlam. One of Orton’s eight wins came at the expense of The Undertaker when the two met at the summer spectacular in 2005.

With The Undertaker hanging up his boots after his Boneyard Match with AJ Styles at WrestleMania 36, it looks as if his win over Brock Lesnar in 2015 will be his final SummerSlam outing. This gives Orton the opportunity to break the tie with The Deadman should he compete at SummerSlam in the future.

Just behind Randy Orton and Undertaker on the most appearances list for SummerSlam is John Cena who made his fifteenth appearance at the event in a losing effort against Roman Reigns. Reigns’ victory deprived Cena of the chance to break his tie with Ric Flair for most world championship reigns in history.

With Orton and Riddle’s victory, the night also marked The Viper’s third reign as a tag team champion in the company. He had previously held tag team gold with Edge as Rated-RKO and with Bray Wyatt and Luke Harper in The Wyatt Family. Orton won the first of his fourteen world championships at SummerSlam in 2004 when he defeated Chris Benoit to become the World Heavyweight Champion.
