WWE Superstar Randy Orton has named a match some might find surprising as one of the top 10 of his two-decade career.
Over the last 20 years, Randy Orton has become one of the most decorated Superstars in the history of WWE. ‘The Viper’ has won every title the company has to offer and amassed an incredible 14 World Title reigns, all while taking on a who’s who of the top wrestlers in WWE.
In a new video for WWE’s official YouTube channel, Randy Orton has reflected on his career by looking back at some of his greatest moments. One match that is in his personal Top 10 is one that many fans may have overlooked, his bout at Armageddon 2003 which saw ‘The Legend Killer’ defeat Rob Van Dam to capture the Intercontinental Championship, the first time he had held a title.
“Watching this match back really brought back the memories of some of the stuff I used to do in the ring. I think I used to do so much more with certain opponents like Rob Van Dam because he was so unorthodox. I mean, he kind of pulled stuff out of the hat just to get it to work. He had so much innovative offence.
“Thinking about back in December 2003 when I won the IC Championship at Armageddon from Rob Van Dam, that’s probably one of my top 10 favourite matches. That was the first title I won in the WWE. 23, that was pretty cool, some huge accolades for such a young guy in the business.
“I remember Ric Flair having the damndest time getting that title to snap around my waist [laughs] but I didn’t care, I was the Intercontinental Champion. That’s what set the pace, I’d say, for all the other championship wins down the line.”
Randy Orton is currently one half of the Raw Tag Team Champions alongside his RK-Bro teammate Riddle. The two will look to add more gold to their collection when they take on SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos in a Winner Takes All Title Unification Match at WrestleMania Backlash on May 8th.
