Randy Orton Admits Thinking Shawn Michaels Was A “Pr*ck” When They First Met

Randy Orton has revealed that he wasn’t the biggest fan of Shawn Michaels when they first met early in his career.

When Randy Orton arrived on WWE’s main roster he walked into a locker room that was home to an incredible number of would be WWE legends. At the time, The Undertaker, Kane, The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H and Shawn Michaels were all still present on WWE television in one shape or another.

Orton would later be paired with Triple H, Ric Flair and Batista as part of Evolution with all three men hanging up their boots as certified legends.

Appearing on The Ringer Wrestling Show, Orton reflected on his early years in WWE. The Viper recalled how those early years impacted him as a person. He went on to compare his development to that of Shawn Michaels, someone who didn’t always have the best reputation backstage, but later changed and evolved for the better.

“I was lucky to have some great men in the locker room, kind of see how they went about life and how they were with their kids. I got to see Shawn Michaels, who, on all accounts was a complete as*hole. And when I met him I even thought he was a pr*ck. But, I saw the change and I heard the stories… And I feel like, it’s kind of funny, the same thing kind of happened to me. Kind of. You know, it’s part of the journey. I think my legacy is the longevity,”

At times during his career, Randy Orton hasn’t always been the most popular figure backstage, something he has acknowledged himself on many occasions. The master of the RKO said that his perceived arrogance came from a place of insecurity.

“My attitude when I was in my mid-20s, I think I walked around with a chip on my shoulder. I think it came across as me being stuck up or a narcist. I think that was kind of cover for me and my insecurities,”

Elsewhere in the interview, Orton reflected on his divisive feud with The Fiend Bray Wyatt. The 14-time World Champion recalled how some parts of the program were a struggle to get through.

Meanwhile, since calling time on his legendary career, Shawn Michaels has taken up a role in NXT. Although HBK has become hugely important to the brand in the absence of Triple H, it had been suggested that his position may be vulnerable as the brand continues to evolve. However, a new report has moved to squash those rumours, revealing that Michaels’ position is safe.
