Randy Orton has revealed the stress he and Edge were under to deliver ‘The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever’ at the 2020 Backlash PPV.
In the 15th edition of WWE’s Backlash PPV, this one was spearheaded by the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” tagline, it was main evented by Randy Orton and Edge – a feud which all began at the 2020 Royal Rumble when Orton was eliminated by Edge.
Speaking on the latest episode of Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Sessions, guest Randy Orton was asked about the match with Edge, and whether he thinks they were backed into a corner with that label.
Whilst a tough moniker to step up to, The Legend Killer admits that it eventually turned out to be one of his personal favourites.
What a stressful position to be in! But this is one of my favourite matches I’ve ever had. I’m very happy with this match.
Not only because of the pandemic and it was a weird situation to be in, but I feel like you can never have ‘the greatest wrestling match ever,’ but given the shackles that we were put under, it was an uphill battle, we did everything we could to do our best and we had the NXT crowd too.
Orton praised the support he and Edge received on the night from the NXT crowd, the younger talent adding their own noise in a unique situation for all of them to have to adapt to.
To be able to feel that. Here’s these guys, much younger than me, they’re watching like, ‘this is how it’s done.’ There was a sense of pride in that too.
Not only were we out there wrestling and working with no crowd and with the piped-in noise and the little bells and whistles, but we had that NXT crowd. It was like class. Let’s show them how it’s supposed to be done. We took our time and we got everything out of it.
It’s one of my favourite matches.
Randy Orton defeated Edge in the match, with a foot like a traction engine he Punt Kicked Edge to take the win after a hellacious affair in which the two traded iconic finisher after finisher.
Eddie Guerrero’s Three Amigos, Kurt Angle’s Olympic Slam, Christian’s Unprettier/Kill Switch, Triple H’s Pedigree, and The Rock’s Rock Bottom, just some of the insanely fun spots which the pair delivered that night.
Edge is now set to face Roman Reigns and the recently added Daniel Bryan for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 37. Orton however, is afflicted with having to end ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt once again as Wyatt has seemingly returned…from, the dead? We’re unsure, but it’s going to be a blast!
