Randy Orton has become world champion for a record-setting 14th time after defeating Drew McIntyre for the WWE Championship in the main event of WWE Hell In A Cell.
The two had a gruelling Hell In A Cell bout in the pay-per-view’s main event, both going to extreme lengths to try and finish the other off. In the match’s most critical moment, McIntyre fell from the side of the cell’s structure through the announcers’ table. This allowed Orton to drag McIntyre back into the ring where he was temporarily stunned by a Claymore kick, but managed to counter a second attempt of the move into an RKO to pick up the pinfall victory.
This was Orton’s third attempt at challenging for McIntyre’s WWE Championship after failing to capture the title at both SummerSlam in August and Clash Of Champions last month.
With this win, Randy Orton ties with Triple H at 14 world championship reigns, giving him the 2nd most in WWE history. Only two Superstars have eclipsed this achievement: John Cena and Ric Flair, who are tied in first place with 16. This also marks Orton’s 10th WWE Championship reign, having won the World Heavyweight Championship four times to make it up to 14 world title reigns overall.
Elsewhere on Hell In A Cell, Otis became only the second man in history to defend and lose his Money In The Bank contract and Sasha Banks ended Bayley’s record-setting SmackDown Women’s Championship reign after a match of the year contender inside Hell In A Cell.
