The last ten months have been a wild ride in the life of Stephanie McMahon.
In May 2022 she announced that she would be taking a break from her duties with WWE to spend more time with her family. This was followed by reports that some within WWE weren’t impressed with her performance in these roles and had actually been forced out.
However, just one month later McMahon was back as Interim Chairwoman as her father Vince McMahon became embroiled in a sexual misconduct scandal. This led to him “retiring” in July. With her father now away from the day-to-day running of WWE, at least officially, Stephanie was appointed Chairwoman and co-CEO alongside Nick Khan.
Although being WWE and the McMahon family, there were more twists to come. Vince McMahon reinstated himself and two associates onto WWE’s Board of Directors on January 6th and was elected Executive Chairman as two more Board members quit. In the midst of the chaos, Stephanie left the company again, seemingly on a more permanent basis.
Remarkably, it seems that she could now return for a second time.
On March 28th Fightful (via Fightful Select) shared an update on Vince McMahon’s role within WWE and the sale of the company. McMahon and WWE have both insisted that he’s only back in a position of power to facilitate the sale of the sports entertainment giant.
Interestingly, the report notes that “numerous sources related to rumored buyers” said that Stephanie McMahon could be a “desired return.”
One source at Disney said “these companies are doing their due diligence, they’re following the news cycles, regardless of their public levels of interest. They’re aware of the things that would make audiences and staff happy. She seemed to bring a lot of positive to the company.”
Why Did Stephanie McMahon Leave WWE?
In the days after her latest WWE departure it was reported by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, that she was “essentially removed from her position.”
“Her letter of resignation from the company was taken officially the next day. Essentially she was removed from her position and then Vince was voted in unanimously.
Stephanie announced she was leaving, but unlike the first time, this was a complete break. It was not a leave of absence but a resignation. And she gave up her position on the Board of Directors.”
McMahon hasn’t spoken publicly about her departure from the company since sharing her resignation letter.
