For weeks there has been an ever-increasing amount of speculation surrounding William Regal and a potential move back to WWE, despite being released from the company less than a year ago.
In the lead-up to WWE Survivor Series Triple H referenced Regal on social media, while it had been rumoured that the British veteran’s departure from the Blackpool Combat Club could have been part of a storyline exit from the company. This theory gained even more weight on the November 30th edition of Dynamite when MJF turned his back on Regal and attacked him, which left him leaving the arena on a stretcher.
William Regal Leaving AEW?
After recently commenting that a move for Regal had been “discussed,” speaking on a recent edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that there is “certainly a possibility” he could head back to WWE.
“There’s stuff that I can’t say, but… whatever the three-year contract is, there’s something up here, okay? And it is certainly a possibility that he’s going back.”
As his in-ring career wound down William Regal moved into a backstage role with WWE, and became an integral part of NXT. As well as appearing as the on-screen General Manager, the British star played a key role in recruitment, and helped sign the likes of Sasha Banks, Kevin Owens, Finn Balor and more. During this period, Regal formed a formidable team with Triple H, which built on their existing friendship which goes back decades.
With Triple H away from WWE, William Regal was released in January 2021 and debuted with AEW just two months later. There have long been suggestions that Regal would eventually return to WWE to work with Triple H now that he has become Chief Content Officer.
