Popular AEW Tag Team Seemingly Split

During a recent interview, one of the members of a popular AEW tag team hinted that they have now gone their separate ways.

Brian Pillman Jr. and Griff Garrison first teamed up in All Elite Wrestling in July 2020, calling themselves the Varsity Blondes. The duo soon saw the addition of Julia Hart to their act.

However, during their feud with the House of Black in the summer of 2022, Hart betrayed the Blondes, leaving them for Malakai Black’s faction. Since then, the Varsity Blondes have been seen less on AEW television with their last match having taken place on the August 21st edition of Dark.

Speaking on “Café De René with René Duprée“, Pillman spoke about the recent developments, explaining that Julia Hart was a huge loss for the team.

“As soon as we lost [Julia Hart], we lost our edge and our spark that made us a good babyface group that could’ve gotten over. […] But somebody came in and decided she would be better with [House of Black]. That’s just how it goes.

“I definitely wasn’t happy with it to be quite honest. It is what it is. It’s business. I thought probably what really stopped us from seeing the true potential of the Varsity Blondes was that we lost her before we really got going.”

Continuing on, Pillman hinted that the Varsity Blondes might no longer be together, referring to the team in the past tense. Despite this, he added that he is still happy being in AEW.

“To have that taken apart was kinda rough for me at that point in my career. But I’m very happy with how it turned out. Really happy with the moment that she had at the pay-per-view. Very happy with being at AEW in general.

“I don’t think that the Varsity Blondes was the fullest creative extension of myself. […] But I think people will look back on the Varsity Blondes quite fondly actually. Who knows what’s next for us?” (H/T Wrestling Inc.)

Brian Pillman Jr. has spoken about a potential singles run in the past, saying in an interview back in June that change would be coming soon.

“I think now it’s time to kind of find myself and maybe focus on a little bit of a singles style and maybe a singles run. I’ve been having a lot of — a lot of thinking going on, a lot of retrospective going on. So I think there’s some change is coming very soon.” (h/t Fightful)
