The future of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship could become clearer in the following weeks after Sasha Banks and Naomi were stripped of the gold.
On the 16th of May edition of Raw, WWE took the unusual step of allowing fans a peek behind the curtain as they had to change their originally scheduled main event. A Six-Pack Challenge had originally been scheduled to find the number one contender for Bianca Belair’s Raw Women’s Title at Hell In A Cell.
Sasha Banks, Naomi, Doudrop, Nikki A.S.H, Becky Lynch, and Asuka were scheduled to compete in the match but WWE was rocked during the night when Banks and Naomi handed their WWE Women’s Tag Team Title belts to Head of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis and left the building.
On the following edition of SmackDown, Michael Cole confirmed that the championships were now vacant and that a tournament would be held to crown new champions – although no further information was given.
Now Dave Meltzer has written in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that a four-team tournament has been the subject of at least two of the pitches made by the WWE creative team. The teams said to be involved would be Natalya & Shayna Baszler, Tamina & Dana Brooke, Nikki A.S.H & Doudrop, and Carmella & Queen Zelina.
The team of Carmella and Queen Zelina split up soon after they lost the WWE Women’s Tag Team Title to Banks and Naomi at WrestleMania 38. Since then only Baszler and Natalya have teamed regularly although Nikki A.S.H and Doudrop did face Sasha Banks and Naomi recently on Raw in a losing effort.
