WWE has hired former TNA X-Division Champion Petey Williams for a backstage role after Williams had been on trial in the company for several months.
Petey Williams made his name in TNA after joining the company in 2004 as a member of Team Canada. Later that same year Williams captured the X-Division Title for the first time after winning a 22 man Gauntlet For The Gold match.
Petey Williams stayed with Team Canada until the group was disbanded by Jim Cornette in 2006. From there he feuded with the likes of LAX and Team 3D before he began his memorable run as “Little Petey Pump” teaming with Scott Steiner. Steiner’s influence helped Williams to his second run as X-Division Champion.
Williams left TNA in 2009 and made brief returns in 2013 and 2014 before a more substantial return to the company now known as IMPACT Wrestling began in 2017. Petey Williams stayed with the company until November 2021, last appearing during a Call Your Shot Gauntlet Spot 20-person Battle Royal.
Perhaps Williams’ biggest contribution so far however is his innovative Canadian Destroyer finishing move. The Destroyer was a monumental match ender when Williams first broke it out on television during his initial TNA run. These days the front flip piledriver is performed in several variations almost every week by stars as divergent as Chelsea Green and Dustin Rhodes.
Fightful Select has reported that Petey Williams has been hired in a full-time role as a producer in WWE after apparently wowing during a trial period with the company. The report states that many within the company have been impressed with Williams’ skills in the role.
The move might come as a surprise to some given WWE’s “budget cuts” that have slashed their roster and backstage personnel in 2021. These cuts have continued into 2022 with seemingly the last vestiges of the black and gold era of NXT being let go by the company.
