Kevin Owens has been one of the top stars in WWE for several years now. He had an impressive first year on the main roster: he had three great matches with John Cena, won the Intercontinental Championship, and he got multiple shots at the WWE title as well.
But there have also been some negatives as well, including an infamous comedy sketch that saw Owens get pied in the face.
Not long after the initial skit, people started wondering who threw the pie in Kevin Owens’ face. from how the skit was shot and edited, Owens turned around looked directly at the camera, froze, and then the camera cut to the opposite shot showing a pie appearing from below.
Based on how it was edited, no one was actually seen holding the pie and the camera didn’t cut to someone standing there gloating to get a pop from the crowd.
WWE lampshaded this with a follow-up skit that saw several WWE superstars questioned about the event. it also featured Renee Young/Paquette interviewing Kevin Owens afterwards asking him if he had figured it out, only for him to be frustrated that she hadn’t found out either. And so for years this mystery remained unsolved…until now.
The person who threw the pie wasn’t going to be revealed on the spot
It was revealed that the original plan was for Vince McMahon to be the one to have thrown the pie. This gimmick was dropped and instead the culprit’s identity was never revealed by WWE.
According to Meltzer and Road Dogg, Kevin Owens was always supposed to be hit by a ‘phantom’ pie with the thrower being unknown at first. He wasn’t supposed to discover that Vince was behind it until much later.
