Paul Wight In-Ring Return Hinted At In New AEW Trademark?

How Paul Wight Received

Rumors arise about Paul Wight’s AEW in-ring return.

Last wrestling on the 29th January 2024, Chris Jericho Cruise, veteran Paul Wight has been absent from the wrestling scenario since then. However, recent activities suggest Wight’s upcoming in-ring return.

As per documents on the US Patent & Trademark Office website, AEW filed to trademark “Captain Insano” for wrestling purposes on Friday, January 24, 2025. Tony Khan’s Jacksonville-based promotion could use “Captain Insano”, Wight’s ring name used in the infamous 1998 Adam Sandler film, ‘The Waterboy’.

The recent trademark was filed for “performances by a professional wrestler” hinting toward an in-ring appearance for the character. This is the second time AEW has filed for the trademark since 2021, which was for a different purpose.

In 2021, AEW filed for Captain Insano to trademark the term for video games and digital media. The filing read:

“Video game cartridges and discs featuring wrestling games; Digital media, namely, pre-recorded DVDs, downloadable audio and video recordings, and CDs featuring and promoting wrestling; Downloadable video game software featuring wrestling games; Recorded video game software featuring wrestling games.”

Wight previously appeared in the gimmick at the Country Music Association (CMA) Awards in November 2024, where he appeared on stage during Bailey Zimmerman’s performance of “New to Country.”

Paul Wight Open To Captain Insano In The Final Years Of His Career

During an appearance on Downunder the Ring in September 2024, wrestling veteran Paul Wight opened up on getting back to in-ring action and donning the ‘Captain Insano’ gimmick in his career’s final run.

“Captain Insano was a pretty cool gift. Tony Khan worked it out, got the intellectual property rights for me. So we’ve been waiting to pull the trigger on that. Just to be honest, a lot of it’s been my fault. Having surgeries and stuff like that. So it’s about me getting in the gym, training, getting ready [to] where I feel comfortable. Because it’s basically a one-shot run.You know, I can’t pull the trigger on this half-assed and go out and fail. When I pull the trigger on Captain Insano, it’s gotto be 100 percent we run that until the wheels fall off and then we ride off into the sunset.”
