Paul Wight Calls Signing With AEW A “Very Quick Decision”

Wrestling News from Inside the Ropes

AEW have been busy adding to their roster in recent weeks with the arrivals of Christian Cage and “All Ego” Ethan Page, but the move that started it all was Paul Wight formerly known as the Big Show jumping from WWE.

In fact it was Wight who announced the arrival of the “Hall of Fame worthy” talent which would turn out to be Christian Cage at AEW Revolution.

Appearing on the Oral Session podcast with Renee Paquette, Wight has given some detail on how he came to make the highly unexpected move from WWE, where he had been since 1999.

Wight detailed his “very quick decision” before getting into how his frustration in WWE pushed him to make the jump.

“This was a very quick decision that was made in a matter of 48 hours for me,” Wight said. “For me, I think it was just creatively, frustration. I had gone back and forth with Paul Heyman, Bruce Prichard, and Vince. I had some medical issues a couple of years ago where I had problems with a hip real bad, and you know how things are there, where if you get out of the loop a little.”

“It’s real hard for them to work you back into the loop, no matter how much talent you have, no matter how much you have to offer. It was frustrating for me.”

“I’m not going to take my money, sit at home, and be happy like a little princess,” Wight continued. “That’s not my deal. I like to work for my money and earn it and I like performing.”

The former WWE Champion went to explain how he felt that he had more to give, but that he wasn’t being given the opportunity, so made the decision to leave.

“They were trying to use me for other things like [public] relations, which is stuff I like to do anyway,” he continued. “But they were trying to do me a favor and put me in ‘Shady Pines’. I’m like, ‘Don’t put me in ‘Shady Pines’ and I had another opportunity to do something else and I took it.”

Elsewhere in conversation which covered a wide range of topics about Wight and his career, the legendary big man, revealed that he “s**t my pants” in match against Brock Lesnar in South Africa.

Meanwhile AEW Executive Vice President Cody Rhodes, has also been speaking about Wight’s signing, revealing that ‘The Giant ‘approached him about joining AEW before speaking to AEW President Tony Khan.
