Pat McAfee vs. Austin Theory Set For WrestleMania

Pat McAfee

Pat McAfee’s WrestleMania opponent has officially been revealed during the latest episode of WWE SmackDown Live.

On the March 4th episode of WWE SmackDown, it was announced that WWE RAW Superstar and former ‘The Way’ member Austin Theory would be the man to take on the voice of SmackDown Live at WrestleMania 38.

Theory would march down to the ring declaring himself the prodigy of Vince McMahon himself before berating McAfee for his ego and calling him a fool for thinking McMahon liked him.

McAfee and Theory would get into a heated exchange with the former NFL Kicker calling Theory a “punk bitch” before jesting that “the internet told me that would happen.”

The WrestleMania 38 clash will be just McAfee’s fourth ever match inside a wrestling ring following a 2009 clash against Warpig and his highly praised NXT bouts against Adam Cole and The Undisputed Era.

The news of Pat McAfee’s upcoming WrestleMania debut was broken by WWE Chairman Vince McMahon on The Pat McAfee Show, with Vince stating he doesn’t “bulls**t” when making offers such as this. Pat McAfee’s opponent is, however, yet to be unveiled (h/t Fightful):

“I want to offer you something. I know you love what we do and you’re part of the team, big time. People in the organization really enjoy you. Fans all over the world really enjoy you being you. You can’t find anyone, I can’t imagine back in the day Bob Costas standing up on the desk and dancing. You’re you and that’s why it works. With that, I’d like to offer you an opportunity to actually wrestle at WrestleMania. In the ring. It would be different than when you play for the Colts. You were the punter. Now, in the ring, you’re going to be a linebacker.”

McAfee began making regular appearances for WWE as a pre-show analyst at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans, continuing his mini-feud with Adam Cole that had begun when McAfee prevented Cole from defeating the then-Aleister Black by disqualification. Ultimately, McAfee’s appearances led him to lose to Adam Cole at NXT TakeOver XXX in an angle built from Cole’s appearance on Pat’s show.

A WarGames loss in December 2020 to Cole and the remainder of The Undisputed ERA was Pat McAfee’s last WWE match before he became a full-time WWE commentator. His WrestleMania match will mark his first on the main roster.
