Pat McAfee has wasted little time in firing back at Brett Favre after it was revealed that the NFL star was suing him for defamation.
The announcer is facing a lawsuit alongside Mississippi Auditor Shad White, and NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe. Favre’s lawsuit quoted McAfee as saying “every time his name gets brought up, we have to mention that he tied the hands of the poor people and took money right out of their pockets” and that “Favre is certainly in the middle of stealing from poor people in Mississippi right now.”
Favre had been accused of knowingly stealing $1.1 million in Mississippi welfare funds in exchange for speeches he never made and returning the $1.1 million, but not the $228,000 in interest he made from the payment.
Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, McAfee was in fighting mood as he addressed the legal action. He revealed that he had been contacted by “New York lawyers” who told him that he needed to remove all mentions of Favre from his show archives and social media. Unsurprisingly, McAfee wasn’t on board with the suggestion.
“So I looked at that and said, ‘That’s hilarious.’ Of course, we’re not doing that. Put that down, move on with my life.”
McAfee added that the quotes in the lawsuit were correct, but that they omit the heavily used word, “allegedly.”
“I would like to let everyone know the quotes that were in that lawsuit were certainly accurate, but there’s one word that I believe that was said often on this program, which was allegedly. Our job is to report the news. At the time, it was allegedly going on down in Mississippi with Brett Farve, the man suing me for money.
We had to cover that situation, and we certainly said allegedly and a lot of people were wondering how my lawyers were going to handle this, you know it, I ain’t got em, so let’s ride this f**ker. I’m excited. I’ll see you in court, pal.”
