Former WWE Divas Champion Paige has revealed the unlikely tale of how her unusual name came as a result of an acid trip.
The English star has been known as Paige since shortly after she debuted as part of WWE’s then-developmental territory FCW. With the advent of NXT, Paige became the first NXT Women’s Champion in 2013, becoming the first of two women to go on to become undefeated NXT Women’s Champion, vacating the title rather than losing it following a move to the main roster.
That move for Paige came in 2014 on the night after WrestleMania 30 when she unexpectedly won the WWE Divas Championship on her first night on Raw when she defeated AJ Lee.
From there, Paige went on to become an integral part of WWE’s women’s division until she was forced into medical retirement following a bad neck injury that occurred in December 2017. Since then she has acted as a manager for the likes of Asuka and Kairi Sane as well as a spell as SmackDown General Manager.
Before her WWE stint, however, and still to her friends, the star is known by her real name of Saraya, which just so happened to be the name her mother used in her wrestling career.
Responding to a fan on social media, the 29-year-old revealed the origins of her real name and that of her mother’s wrestling moniker:
“Thanks my mum got it from an acid trip at a concert, misheard Slayer for Saraya and boom. A star is born.”

The story of Paige’s rise to WWE and her family’s place in the wrestling scene in their native England was told in the movie, Fighting with My Family which was produced in part by The Rock’s Seven Bucks Productions.
