Legendary referee Mike Chioda had a heart-warming interaction with Owen Hart’s son at the finals of the Owen Hart Memorial Tournament.
Chioda also admitted that it was an honour for him personally to be involved in the tournament, as someone who knew Owen Hart when he was with WWE in the 1990’s.
After not appearing on-screen in AEW in a number of months, Chioda was the third man in the ring for the men’s tournament final between Samoa Joe and eventual tournament winner, Adam Cole. Reflecting on the moment, the veteran official said that it was an honour to be part of the match.
“It was an honour to do that, you know. And like I said, I wanted to thank AEW and Dean Malenko and all those guys. It was just a true honour to do that match. I didn’t really talk to Martha Hart. She was pretty busy planning a lot of things with some agents and going over a few things with Tony Kahn.
And I spoke to, you know, his son Oje. And, you know, it was, it was nice talking to him, and he wasn’t too familiar, as far as I think updated with the business, you know. He said he’s spent a lot of time six, seven years or eight years, last eight years, six or eight years in London. So it’s where he’s living in spare time in London going to school, I’m sure and so forth.
So we had a nice conversation, and we talked, I showed him the picture of Owen and myself and the 123 Kid and talked. And it’s really because he’s like ‘Oh, my God I’ve seen that picture before you know.’ And so, and he was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s you?’ And I was like, Yeah, you know, it was me.
So we had a really nice conversation for about 15 20 minutes and stuff and that’s it. And it was just an honour to do that match. You know, like many years I’ve done many matches of Owen Hart’s and spent a lot of time with him on the road. And it was just honour, would have liked to see Bret there.”
Mike Chioda was a WWE official for over three decades before his release in 2020. During his career, Chioda has presided over some of the most famous matches in modern history, perhaps most famously the WrestleMania X8 showdown between The Rock and Hulk Hogan.
