A new report has lifted the lid on the original plans for the AEW All Out min event which featured Jon Moxley and CM Punk.
At AEW All Out CM Punk and Jon Moxley met in the main event with the World Championship on the line. The story began back in June when Punk announced that he had suffered an injury that required surgery just days after winning the title.
With Punk out of action, a tournament was created to decide a new Interim World Champion. The tournament was won by Jon Moxley. This led to a unification match on the August 24th edition of Dynamite, which Moxley won. However, a rematch was confirmed for All Out in Chicago, where the hometown boy regained the gold.
On a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that the original plans for the All Out main event would have seen Punk wrestle MJF.
“[Tony Khan] put the [interim] championship on him [Jon Moxley] when CM Punk got hurt the first time because he thought [Moxley] was the best guy for the job and the guy to build up Punk before Punk faced MJF. The original plan for Chicago was Punk/MJF but because Punk got hurt and had to win the [unified] championship, they had to delay Punk and MJF. It was going to be for the November pay-per-view [Full Gear] so it’s probably Moxley and MJF at Full Gear, most likely,”
Jon Moxley was crowned AEW World Champion for a third time at AEW Dynamite Grand Slam after defeating Bryan Danielson. The match was the finals the ‘Tournament of Champions’ set up after the World Title was vacated.
