There were returns, betrayals, and matches set up for the next NXT TakeOver which has been announced for SummerSlam weekend at the latest set of NXT tapings.
This weeks edition of NXT saw Karrion Kross take out William Regal, one week after he choked out Samoa Joe in the ring after Joe had been the special referee in Kross’ successful title defence against Johnny Gargano.
Two weeks worth of NXT shows were taped on Wednesday due to the show being pre-empted to Syfy from the USA Network due to their coverage of the Olympics.
The big news coming from the tapings is that Samoa Joe is no longer NXT General Manager William Regal’s enforcer with Regal accepting Joe’s resignation from the role. Regal then immediately made an NXT Championship match for NXT TakeOver 36 which sees Karrion Kross defend his title against Joe. This will be Samoa Joe’s first match since the 10th of February 2020 when Joe teamed with the Viking Raiders and Kevin Owens to face Seth Rollins, Buddy Murphy, and the Authors Of Pain. Joe was the first and remains one of only four NXT Superstars to have held the black and gold brand’s top prize on two occasions.
Elsewhere, Ridge Holland made his return after a serious injury kept him out of action for several months. The former rugby league player helped Pete Dunne and Oney Lorcan attack Tommaso Ciampa and Timothy Thatcher. That will air on the 27th of July while on August 3rd, fans can see Holland back in the ring as he faced Ikemen Jiro with Dunne and Lorcan watching on.
NXT Women’s Champion Raquel Gonzalez cut a promo in the ring with Dakota Kai by her side. As Gonzalez noted how dominant she has been, she praised Kai for having her back and said nobody could take the title from Big Mami Cool as long as the two stuck together. Gonzalez would have been well-served to talk to Tegan Nox about how Kai treats her friends as the New Zealander attacked Gonzalez before holding her title belt aloft.
In the main event of the 27th of July show Adam Cole defeated former NXT North American Champion Bronson Reed. After the match, Kyle O’Reilly attacked Cole as their feud looks like continuing despite Cole beating O’Reilly at The Great American Bash.
On the 3rd of August, there might be heartbreak in NXT as Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae have run out of patience with Indi Hartwell and Dexter Lumis’ burgeoning romance. Gargano faced Lumis in a ‘Love Her Or Leave Her’ match with Gargano coming out the victor. As per the stipulation, Dexter Lumis must stop chasing Hartwell. After the match, however, Hartwell ran to the ring to stand by her man as she and Lumis kissed before leaving with one another.
