NXT 2.0 started 2022 with a bang, putting on the second annual edition of New Year’s Evil!
On its first episode of the year, NXT 2.0 pulled out all the stops with multiple blockbuster match announcements and guest appearances from Superstars across other WWE brands.
Toxic Attraction’s Mandy Rose defended her NXT Women’s Championship in a triple threat match against former champion Raquel Gonzalez and young upstart Cora Jade, who had a recent upset victory over the champion. Gonzalez and Jade have had their alliance tested in recent weeks, struggling with whether to support each other or make it every woman for herself in pursuit of the top prize in NXT.
One of the most unexpected matches on the card saw Raw Tag Team Champion Riddle team with MSK against NXT 2.0 Tag Team Champions Imperium along with their leader, former NXT UK Champion WALTER. Riddle was recently revealed to be the elusive Shaman that MSK had been on a journey to find, and he’s been mentoring the team in recent weeks.
Riddle wasn’t the only Raw Superstar featured on the show, however, as AJ Styles made another NXT appearance to confront the brash Grayson Waller, who’d been insulting the former WWE Champion in recent weeks. Their feud has seen AJ Styles appear in NXT and Grayson Waller also made a surprise appearance on the December 27th episode of Monday Night Raw ahead of their New Year’s Evil clash.
New Year’s Evil also saw a championship unification match as NXT Cruiserweight Champion Roderick Strong took on NXT North American Champion Carmelo Hayes.
The show was headlined by the NXT Championship match between reigning champion Tommaso Ciampa and second generation star Bron Breakker. Breakker was unsuccessful in his first attempt to capture the NXT Championship at Halloween Havoc but was able to score a pinfall victory over the champion at WarGames. The match was held without commercials.
