NJPW Strong Announce New Openweight Tag Team Championship Tournament

NJPW Strong

NJPW Global have announced it will introduce new NJPW Strong Openweight Tag Team Championships this Summer.

The new tag titles will be determined by an eight team tournament, beginning on the 19th of June, with the finals held on the 24th July.

This announcement comes ahead of this Sunday’s NJPW Dominion and though no entrants have been announced as yet, it will undoubtedly feature some familiar names.

With the AEW and NJPW Forbidden Door PPV taking place on the 26th of June, the NJPW roster will be in the US when the tournament is happening.

It is unknown if Bullet Club’s IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions, Chase Owens and Bad Luck Fale will enter the tournament but they must first contend with United Empire’s Jeff Cobb and Great-O-Khan, at Dominion.

Team Filthy’s Royce Isaacs and Jorel Nelson will be in contention, as will United Empire’s Aussie Open, Kyle Fletcher and Mark Davis but the newly crowned champions could just as easily come from outside NJPW.

AEW and IMPACT wrestlers regularly appear in NJPW, most recently when AEW’s Ring Of Honor Pure Champion, Wheeler Yuta and IMPACT Wrestling’s X-Division Champion, Ace Austin, both appeared in the Best Of Super Juniors 29.

Jon Moxley, Jonathan Gresham, Josh Alexander, Killer Kross, Eddie Kingston and Swerve Strickland have all appeared at NJPW Strong events. Moxley, in particular, has often spoken of his love of New Japan.

The tournament begins in Vermont, Hollywood on June the 19th.
