Bryan Danielson is widely regarded as one of the best wrestlers in the world today, and as a result there is never a shortage of stars wanting to test themselves against the American Dragon.
It has now been reported that this list includes New Japan star Katsuyori Shibata. Furthermore, that match moved a step closer after Shibata made a shock appearance on the November 2nd episode of AEW Dynamite.
On the show, Shibata came to the aid of Orange Cassidy who was being attacked by PAC, after successfully defending his All-Atlantic Championship against Rey Fenix and Luchasaurus. After the match Cassidy offered the Japanese star a chance to sign his open contract for a match involving the title on the November 4th edition of Rampage. It was an offer that Shibata quickly accepted.
Katsuyori Shibata Targeting Bout With Bryan Danielson
Speaking on a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that Shibata had requested two matches in AEW, one against Bryan Danielson and the other against Orange Cassidy. Due to Shibata being free, the bout with Cassidy was quickly made for November 4th. It is unclear whether there is a planned date for a match with Danielson.
Shibata has only wrestled twice since an injury-enforced hiatus in 2017 which saw him undergo surgery for a subdural hematoma after collapsing backstage. At the time it was widely believed that the star would never wrestle again. Despite this, Shibata competed in a five minute exhibition against Zack Sabre Jr. in October 2021.
The star was successful in his first ‘proper’ match back on January 4th 2022 at Wrestle Kingdom 16 against Ren Narita. Although he hasn’t wrestled since.
Elsewhere on Dynamite, Colt Cabana returned to the show for the first time in a little under a year when he challenged Chris Jericho for the Ring of Honor World Championship.
The show also featured the AEW debut of WWE Hall of Famer Jeff Jarrett. The former Intercontinental Champion instantly made an impact by smashing his signature guitar over the head of Darby Allin. It was later confirmed by Tony Khan that Jarrett will be working as Director of Business Development.
